Tis the season...

There are many reasons to celebrate Christmas. As often as we take it as an excuse to catch up with friends (some to get drunk or high) or shop til we drop, at least, it is ONE GOOD reason for us to drop our busy schedules and give a part of our time to those we profess we love.

I am at the age where I am beginning to truly experience loss and regret. I've shared a good many tears with close friends who have lost their parents too. There are only 24 hours alloted to Christmas. May I suggest that before we rush to fulfill our big plans for parties and what to wear and what gifts to buy, let's pause and think, how much time do I give to my mom and dad in that 24 hours to just sit by them and hold their hands and listen? Or my kids, spouse and siblings?

We all have a ton of things to do that we can never ever finish anyway. But our families are NOT THINGS. As I am writing this, I sense the clock ticking. And life is over even before we feel it begin. And if there is a worthwhile gift to give, it is the best of ourselves. And what is our best? Not in the gift we cleverly choose or the card that we impress annually with poetic zest, but really, simply, ourselves.

Mind, heart and person.

The annual hot sale has arrived. Its amazing how we Singaporean women are able to brave the blazing tropical heat to pick up a bargain product that we probably will not use. No matter. It won't come as a surprise to many of us if a poll is done and the GSS wins as a phenomenon that women have more vested interest in than the recent GE. Not that we are shallow but comsumerism is the byproduct of urban evolution, isn't it? And we are urbanites, born of urbanites, almost helpless to the sick smog of desire to have a piece of every pie, ultimately, enslaving ourselves to covetism.

Thank you for taking time out to drop by my little flea shop - your presence was so uplifting! Also, surprisingly flattered by a video crew who interviewed us and one prestigious shopping establishment for your invitation to set up stall at your shopping centre.

Gluten free muffins and accessories - an odd but fun combo - know any gluten intolerant folks? My in law is one and she is on the cause of discovering and creating affordable and palatable goodies for similarly impoverished friends.

Its pretty interesting to people watch at Scape - the cash gets recycled within the confines of the event space i.e. girls set up shop to sell their used clothes and use the money earned to buy other girls' used clothes. And why not? In this span of teenhood where the amount of cash is still dependent on how you behave (aka parents), this is a great way of staying on trend without bursting the pocket. Wished such flea marts existed a decade back... And sociologists should study this economic phenomenon of the 21st century - its a culture that should be named..

when auntie susan got her first paycheck

It was Chinese New Year and I was with my 4th auntie at the dining table plowing through old photos. I was afraid at first that she might be reminded of my dear cousin who was killed in an accident many years back. Yet as she turned page after page, her eyes shone as she told me stories of how she was the fashionista of the house - how she taught my mother how to sew and dress, how she was a seamstress and designed the latest fashion of those early years... her first bag bought with her own money will probably have looked like this.
